Giveaway: Celebrate Earth Day the Hollywood Way!

The first Earth Day was in 1970 — at the height of hippie and flower-child culture in the United States, the time of Jimi Hendrix, the last Beatles album, and war protest…and realization of what we were doing to the world around us.

That year, on April 22, millions of Americans took to the streets to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment. They were fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife … a lot of the same thing we’re all still fighting against today.

But Earth Day is also a time of celebration of our planet – and apparently, celebrities – as usual – know how to celebrate with far more style!

Earth Day in Hollywood is quite the affair — just check out the gift bag that twenty-five environmentally-conscious stars are receiving —  people like Jeremy Piven, Tom Hank, Bill Maher, Adrian Grenier, Kate Bosworth, P!nk, Leonardo DiCaprio, Dave Matthews, Rosario Dawson, Woody Harrelson, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Daryl Hannah, Drew Barrymore, Ellen DeGeneres, Orlando Bloom, Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Hartnett, Sting, Barbra Streisand, Alicia Silverstone, Courteney Cox, Cameron Diaz, KT Tunstall, Mark Ruffalo and Edward Norton.

The bags are being distributed by  Distinctive Assets, an LA-based entertainment marketing company, and let me tell you – it’s making wich more than ever I was a bit more famous. (OK…who doesn’t wish that???)

I was super lucky to receive a bag containing MANY of these items — and one of you will win everything in my bag!

This year I actually planted a small container vegetable garden and we are recycling more than ever ……if we love the earth, we have to take care of it!!!

We celebrate Earth Day everyday here by using eco-friendly products on our ranch. Our animals are pampered and cared for with love. We raise our own hay and feed only the best to our girls. They have hundreds of acres to roam with plenty of clean, fresh water under deep blue skies and clear starry nights. And all the while, we are caring for Mother Earth to the best of our ability. We are doing our small part to improve the environment one day at a time.

We recyle all year – we also use cloth bags to buy our groceries and stop using plastic bags. We also have a veggie garden we grow in our back yard. My husband has replaced every single light in our home with either LED or CFL lights that use much less energy in our home. We try to help save the earth in any way we can control at home. We’re considering an electric car but frankly the cost of them is beyond our budget right now.

I carry a reusable water bottle everywhere with me so that I’m not buying bottled water when I get thirsty, bring my own bags with me when I go grocery shopping (and they usually hold more than flimsy plastic grocery store ones do!), recycle like a mad woman, turn off lights when not in a room, unplug devices when they’re not being used and wash my laundry with cold water.

I recently found out that there are green markets around NYC where you can drop off compostable garbage so I’m planning on collecting all my compostable garbage and dropping them off at the markets every week.

I don’t buy things I don’t need, we make it a family challenge to recycle everything. I use and buy products that are not tested on animals. With food prices soaring and our forests being cut down, we started growing our own fruits and vegetables, the kids get involved too.

Well, I’ve been recycling for years, and I regularly sign petitons to hold polluters responsible, and to get Clean Air & Water bills passed, and/or from being weakened, or stripped. I also use natural cleaning supplies, better for the Earth, and much safer, and on me, our home, and my chemical sensitivities. Also, I offset my computer usage with credits.

This year, I plan to improve by eating more whole, unprocessed foods, which will mean I’m using less packaging, and I intend to eat more organic produce.

I’ll be honest with you: I don’t have much of an idea what I’m doing to improve the environment this Earth Day. Sure, I recycle, as we all should, and I use a reusable water bottle but I admit to slipping occasionally and buying an actual bottle of water. This year, however, I plan to do a great deal of research into what else aI can do. As an amateur food critic (who happens to be totally blind) perhaps I can locate some restaurants in New York City which are more eco-friendly? Following you on twitter, retweeted this and thanks for the opportunity!

In generally to improve the environment we recycle everything possible. Most weeks we have WAY more in our recycling bin than our garbage, which is great. Fortunately, my garbage company has single stream recycling, which makes it so easy to be conscientious.

Moving forward this year, I’d really like to focus on planting some new trees in my yard to help keep my soil, it’s very sandy and sort of needs something to keep it together, if that makes sense!

We’ve been using CFL bulbs forever, recycling and composting and keeping our consumerism in check. We also use greener cleaners. But a recent change turned out to be a terrific choice. We purchased some Eco friendly fridge containers that are air tight and involve micro silver. It was taken our veggie and fruit waste down to almost nothing. We had to spend a bit of money on the containers, but they paid for themselves within about a month of use. Spoilage be gone!

We have replaced our regular weekly soda purchases with a new Soda Stream maker and make our soda at home, now there are no more cans or bottles to throw away or recycle and this change will be a huge improvement at my house plus a money saver, we’ve started replacing our old light bulbs with more energy efficient bulbs that will last longer, burn better, we also are trying to use less electricity, the things I took for granted like the daily dishwasher use are now only being used twice a week, instead I do them the old fashioned way to save on electricity use.

This year I learned how to compost when I volunteered in the Overtown area in Miami, Florida. The company is called Roots in the City and they like to recycle old and dried out plants and use other it to make other things. After composting I feel as though I made a difference in my community and helped save money for those consumers who rely on Roots in the City for food.

Also, I plan to use my reusable go-green bags that I get quite frequently at events and use those to place my groceries in them instead of using the plastic bags that they give you at the store.

I celebrate Earth Day everyday. I am an avid recycler of daily refuse. I compost vegetable matter to fertilize my garden and donate used items to goodwill.
