Giveaway: Kenneth Cole’s AWEARNESS book (autographed by Kenneth Cole himself!)

Currently situated in my home in a place of utmost prominence is Kenneth Cole’s AWEARNESS –a book including 86 essays and conversations by individuals who have been inspired to do their part to effect meaningful social change. Even more inspiring? 100% of net proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to the AWEARNESS Fund. Sometimes the issues going on around the world seem overwhelming, and too big for any one person to do anything about — what can we do about poverty, sickness, war? But we’re not powerless, and this book shares how individuals just like you and me can make amazing, powerful impacts. Flipping through this book is a giant wake-up call for me — that not only CAN we all make a difference, but that we have...

The secrets to success (when you think you’ve hit your breaking point)

The secrets to success (when you think you’ve hit your breaking point)

My close friends and I sometimes have discussions about what it means to be doing what we’re doing, in the way we are doing it, right now — and why, all too often, it feels like we’re Sisyphus, compelled to roll an immense boulder up a hill, only to watch it roll back down, and to repeat this throughout eternity. And, as we sit among our dirty martinis and beautifully plated cheese cubes — because our world of dubious plenty allows this distinction – we wonder if ultimately that is what living life day to day is really like — barely surviving. Working yourself to the bone, in the face of ever-diminishing returns, just watching everything you value begin to feel less obtainable. When life’s little “emergencies” crop up—it...

Let’s take a minute for a giggle: Kris Jenner is the face of Zestra

Let’s take a minute for a giggle: Kris Jenner is the face of Zestra

It’s a tumultuous week, we all need a good snark. Let us talk for a second about Kim K’s mommy dearest, Kris Jenner. Poor woman — apparently she was undaunted by the exceedingly terrible PR  surrounding her and daughter Kim’s apocalyptic marriage. Her latest gig? Kardashian family matriarch Kris Jenner is the face of Zestra, a blend of botanical oils and extracts that she claims help to keep the flames alive with her hustand (ahem….) – which, I don’t know about you, is way more Kardashian info than I needed. The botanical ingredients in Zestra include PA-free Borage seed oil, Evening Primrose oil, Angelica extract, Coleus Forskholii extract, Theobromine, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. Kris says, “Relationships have ebbs...

When “the worst” happens, and nothing changes

When “the worst” happens, and nothing changes

I think many of us have an internal dialogue we truly believe is unique to everyone else’s – that, at our truest core, we are invincible. Nothing bad will ever happen to us – and if it does, it’ll be FINE, because obviously we will live to be 100 (and complain the whole time), and have enough money to pay our bills, and get married, and have 2 kids, 2 dogs, and perhaps a fish. We never imagine ourselves otherwise, that our life path can be altered by anything other than our own design. Our self-loathing may suggest otherwise, but our victimization concept is rather narcissistic, and subjective as to the definition of what suffering actually is — but then reality does get in the way. And, sometimes, the things we think could never...

No More Tanning Beds for California’s Teen Scene

No More Tanning Beds for California’s Teen Scene

Good news for healthy skin, bad news for fans of Jersey Shore: California has become the first state to ban minors from using tanning beds. It seems like a no-brainer, but I’m guessing Toddlers and Tiaras mommas are beside themselves. The L.A. Times reports that California Jerry Brown has signed legislation into law that forbids minors from using tanning beds. The law takes effect January 1, 2012. Sen. Ted Lieu (D-Torrance) told the L.A. Times that his bill is needed to protect kids under age 18 from using the dangerous tanning beds. He said, “If everyone knew the true dangers of tanning beds, they’d be shocked. Skin cancer is a rising epidemic and the leading cause of cancer death for women between 25 and 29.” A study in 2009 found that...

I Live for Motivational Incentives: Check Out Athleta’s New Foursquare Campaign

I Live for Motivational Incentives: Check Out Athleta’s New Foursquare Campaign

I suck at all things related to health, wellness, fitness, and exercise. (Case in point: Give a woman a gym membership, she will promptly get the three-week plague that precludes actually using it.) But, I’m somewhat back in action – and more out of shape than ever, which means I can use all the advice I can get. Color me intrigued that through October 19, Athleta has rolled out a slew of perks and incentives for Foursquare users (of which I’m already an avowed addict). Here’s how it works: Check in from from their locations — 1517 3rd Avenue or 216 Columbus Avenue — and you’ll score useful tips from fitness experts. (Read: You will actually have to USE these tips in order for them to be useful. This is where I always seem...

Fashion News: The Limited to Launch Eloquii Plus-Size Line

The Limited has announced they are launching a plus-size fashion line, eloquii by The Limited. Interestingly, they say the inspiration for the collection started with customers and bloggers voicing their frustration to The Limited CEO, Linda Heasley. Women with curves are going to ‘Rejoice in the Double-Takes’ they will be getting from family, friends, and acquaintances as they learn a whole new fashion vocabulary with eloquii by The Limited,” Heasley says. The eloquii online store will launch this month at eloquii.com and will feature a range of fashion apparel and accessories for plus-size women such as dresses, suits, outerwear, pants, tops, shirts and...

Day One: Gilroy Garlic Festival

Day One: Gilroy Garlic Festival

Guess where I am right now? Gilroy, CA – the world capital of GARLIC. You may wonder why we’re supposed to care about this, but it’s actually pretty awesome — and I’m here with Scope Dual Blast (a sponsor of the event, who flew me out as their guest) – enjoying garlic in every shape, form, and method one could imagine. It’s a food festival of ultimate foodies, dedicated to garlic. Today, the Master Chef Challenge took place, as well as an event called “So You Think You Can Cook with Garlic”, as well as showcasing by local celebrity chefs, Saka Bozzo and Ada Wong (Biggest Loser). Let me tell you, I got off the exit for my hotel last night, and I immediately smelled the garlic fields through the CLOSED window pane. My...

Sigh: Vacancy Rate at U.S. Malls and Strip Malls Increasing

Sigh: Vacancy Rate at U.S. Malls and Strip Malls Increasing

Regardless of any of our money situations, you probably still enjoy the sport of shopping — and in that case, you have likely noticed that many of the vacant retail spaces at your local mall and strip malls have remained vacant since the recession began in 2008. The Wall Street Journal reported this weekend that vacancy rates at U.S. malls and strip malls are on the rise and the weak economy is continuing to lead to closed stores. Obviously, it’s a double-edged sword: The bad economy also makes it hard for retailers to afford to open news stores. The Wall Street Journal says data from Reis Inc. indicates vacancy figures at malls in the top 80 U.S. markets climbed from 9.1% in Q1 2011 to 9.3% in Q2 2011. The vacancy rate at strip malls is even ...
