What are your personal goals for the new year?

What are your personal goals for the new year?

Many people create annual goals to mark the passing of the new year. I’ve always considered the year as existing from birthday to birthday, though. With my birthday having just passed and the new year a few short days away, this has been at the center of my mind for a while now. This has been a tough year where I’ve lost, learned, and figured out a lot about myself. I have a lot of hopes and aspirations for the year to come. A year that I hope to be stronger, wiser, and take better care of myself.  A year full of goals where I finally learn to put myself first. Among these goals is learning to say “no” — and meaning it. I’ve always been afraid of disappointing people, my instinct being to put their happiness and comfort before...

Surprising discoveries that lead to a more peaceful holiday season (and new year!)

Surprising discoveries that lead to a more peaceful holiday season (and new year!)

I just learned a really interesting chance factoid. Studies have found that male fruit flies rejected by females drink significantly more alcohol than those that have “achieved their conquest”. The world is so amazing in that way, where we can see a common household flying insect as a nuisance. A pest to be eliminated. And then discover that we have something so basic and primal in common with them. And what does that mean? To me, during the holiday season — and, well, always –it means treating everyone in your life with the same consideration and respect you’d hope to receive yourself. Because on a basic level, for all the differences in our personalities and beliefs, we are all the same. We all have feelings, we all get hurt, and we are all...

Deck the Hall and Oates

Deck the Hall and Oates

Nothing like a constant barrage of snow and hail outside your window to get you into the nitty gritty of the holiday season. (Am I a bit of a scrooge this year? Perhaps.) This tee I just came across though is helping me in a big way though. Hall and  Oates  had enough merry to share with all of us (Check out this salute to Yuletide cheer). And this shirt? Well, I just want to wear it to the gym. And everywhere else. How are you motivating yourself into the holiday spirit this...

Who says we can’t have sequin stockings for Hanukkah?

Who says we can’t have sequin stockings for Hanukkah?

Would it be counted as a crisis of faith to say that I feel like I got a bum rap? Hanukkah is great and all, but we don’t have NEARLY as fun decorations abounding as Christmas. For instance, I really would love a sequin stocking like these at Harrods. I mean, just check out the faux-fur trim. It’s so me! You can find them here on harrods.com. (And, yes, I’m still considering the gold one — that totally goes with blue and white, right?) Photo:...

What happens when you lose your Halloween spirit?

What happens when you lose your Halloween spirit?

A journey of Halloween past. My best friend Allie is amazing at the concept costume, so inevitably mid-October, I’ll get a text: WE SHOULD GO AS THE CAST OF GILLIGAN’S ISLAND! Her ideas are usually pretty brilliant, and if I’m feeling the spirit of the season, I’ll go with it. An example of some of our ideas from years past. (Some years, she actually made our costumes by hand, too. Crazy pants.) Halloween used to be a pretty magical time. And it should be. At its essence, it’s that one night we can see the bigger picture of life — that one night of the year where the material world and the other-worldly world meet. It’s the night with the GREATEST potential for magic. But I always loved it most for the reasons Buffy...

My 2012 gift desires (a video tutorial)

My 2012 gift desires (a video tutorial)

This time of year, I’m spending a lot of time writing gift guides for the various sites I contribute to. Just by way of example, here’s some gift guides I’ve written so far that have already gone live (and more coming!): Beauty brush cleaners for the tidy lady Pretty jewelry gifts for your BFF Non gift-card gifts for the diehard fashionista What to buy for your manly man Techy gifts for your guy Beauty gifts for the girl who has everything But ultimately, my desires fall back to, well, ME. My birthday is during the holiday season — and, for me, the ultimate holiday, and whatever the occasion for anyone else, it’s what I most want that is often at the top of many a gift list! Last week, I went to Boston for the day to with P&G...

Embracing the holidays (without going to the poor house)

Embracing the holidays (without going to the poor house)

The holidays are a scary time — and I’m not just talking about the hurricane roaring around us, all but canceling Halloween for the northeast. Most of us are going to spend (way) more on holiday purchases this year compared to last. In fact, according to Alexa von Tobel, founder and CEO of LearnVest.com, 40% of us are going to go way over budget — and, in fact, many of us are still paying off debt from LAST YEAR’s holidays as we spend more money on this year’s season! If you’re planning to put even more under the tree this year, I think a good goal is to make sure you don’t end the holiday season with a chunk of funds missing from your savings account. (Especially if you are like the majority of us and live pay check to...

Get Ready for Gaga’s Workshop at Barneys New York!

Get Ready for Gaga’s Workshop at Barneys New York!

If you needed any other reason to run to Barneys New York, they have announced their upcoming holiday campaign — and it’s going to include a certain Gaga’s workshop! The collaboration with Lady Gaga will be a powerhouse, bringing together greats like Eli Sudbrack and Christophe Hamaide Pierson of Assume Vivid Astro Focus (AVAF), and Mugler Creative Director and Lady Gaga Fashion Director, Nicola Formichetti. The artists and designs will work together to create Lady Gaga’s interpretation of the iconic Santa’s Workshop. Can you just die? This may be the best Christmas ever. (And I’m the biggest scrooge on the block. Sad but true.) Barneys New York will convert an entire floor of its Madison Avenue flagship in New York City into a...
