Is the shake weight the answer to my problems? Probably not, but it’s fun.

Is the shake weight the answer to my problems? Probably not, but it’s fun.

Stress is no joke people. I feel like I’ve been somewhat of a Sad Sally this past week…a lot has been going down, and truth be told, I haven’t been handling it all that well. It’s funny how the human body reacts to times of stress. For the past week, I’ve hardly slept, I seem to only want to eat crap, and I perpetually feel like someone has punched me in my gut and just left their fist there. And now, insult to injury, my hair has started shedding. A sign of crazy going too far. I think something kind of wacky happens when various unrelated events happen all at once. They somehow get intertwined in your head, and in my heart, and all seem to be part of one big compounded storm. Isn’t that how tornados happen too? I’m...

Support La Roche-Posay’s Save our Skin Campaign (and help prevent skin cancer!)

Support La Roche-Posay’s Save our Skin Campaign (and help prevent skin cancer!)

Call it half over-research, half paranoia, but I’m super paranoid about my skin. Every spot ever gets super scrutiny, and I’m never a second late for my annual skin screening. We can all do our part to help ourselves, and others, save our skin from skin cancer, as part of their on-going “Save Our Skin” skin cancer awareness campaign, La Roche-Posay is auctioning off umbrellas that have been signed by a range of celebrities on eBay Giving Works. It’s a super cool initiative, and 100% of the proceeds raised by this auction will benefit the Skin Cancer Foundation! Just like an umbrella protects you from the rain, umbrellas provide a layer of protection from the sun’s harmful rays. You may have noticed lots of people walking around with...

Surviving the worst mosquito season of all time — God help us.

Surviving the worst mosquito season of all time — God help us.

Kill me now. Between the torrential rains and the endless high temps, these past weeks have been as opportune for mosquito breeding as tequila night at the frat house for horny humans. This means that repelling mosquitos — a thought I once left to evening walks and picnics in the park — has become a full-time job. Seriously, I’ve been spraying before I leave my apartment EVERY SINGLE DAY. It’s like putting on my war armor. Mosquito repellent is important — my obsession with Avon’s Bug Guard is legendary — but there’ a lot of other things we should be doing to protect ourselves, as well! Check out my story today for CompletelyYou.com: 1o tips to repel mosquitos. (And if you have any tips, please...

Do women hold each other back? The truth between the war (within) the sexes!

Do women hold each other back? The truth between the war (within) the sexes!

I’ve always believed, when I am feeling down about my life or my day, the best thing to do is go out and help someone — someone who may just make me realize how truly lucky I really am. Every day, women are trying to pursue their dreams and realize their passions, but can be held back (even by other women). Research shows that helping others and being in the supporting company of other women actually reduces stress and makes women healthier and happier. And donating or doing something good releases oxytocin and physiologically, you feel good by doing good. Renowned author and life coach María Marín is no stranger to helping other women grow, realize their passions and reach their potential. Earlier this week, she sat down and answered a few of my...

Giveaway: Zumba Fitness Dance Party (and a reminder of why I hate the gym)

Giveaway: Zumba Fitness Dance Party (and a reminder of why I hate the gym)

This morning, I wrote a rather dramatic post about trying to get back on the fitness “horse” — get ready for a whole bunch of horse analogies because I’m going to the Belmont Stakes this weekend! — and it is something I’m super serious about.  But said horses come in many stripes, and I keep on being reminded that my stripes are not gym colored. Don’t get me wrong, I love group fitness classes — Zumba, yoga, etc — drop-in classes or even package deals at your favorite spots or with your favorite instructors. But the gym? Again and again, I’m questioning if it’s the place for me. We’ve all been there — it can be SUPER hard to motivate ourselves to get to the gym — especially when...

Lululemon’s Luon Black Yoga Pants Return (but has my spirit?)

Lululemon’s Luon Black Yoga Pants Return (but has my spirit?)

OK, that probably sounds a touch more dramatic than necessary. But once upon a time, I was the anti-thesis of fitness-interested. (That vaguely sort of rhymes, right?) Not really. Anyway, another thing that didn’t rhyme was my muscles. Or, the flab sitting on top of them, waiting on the next cheeseburger. Post six-months-of-life-in-peril I actually started to do a lot better – was working out 3X-4X a week, said bye-bye to refined sugars and flours. And I owed it all to a close friend who had become my fitness mentor and led me through every step of the way. She personally tutored me in yoga and Pilates I could do as soon as 2 weeks post-op and I truly believe made it possible for me to regain my strength in pretty record time. Except life happens. And...

Retinol products and the danger of use when waxing

Retinol products and the danger of use when waxing

Earlier this week, I wrote an article for SheKnows discussing the danger of mixing retinol products with our favorite waxing treatments. At the time, I was in Tel Aviv — some may say, the South Beach of Israel, enjoying 90+ temps and anticipating seeing much of the same in my planned trip to Jamaica next week. Well, I’m no longer going to Jamaica — change of plans — and I ended up getting burned in Tel Aviv (in more ways than one) — but the realization while there (and perhaps the impetus behind the article) was that we had a lot of work to do to sun-bask among the young and half-naked. So, what do we do? We use retinol to reduce the signs of aging, and waxing so we don’t look like a hairy huntress while on the prowl. To choose...

Help in the fight against breast cancer: Walk The Walk’s MoonWalk New York City

Help in the fight against breast cancer: Walk The Walk’s MoonWalk New York City

Life is going way better for me than it was this time last year. Of course, last year, it was going pretty shitty, but it makes me feel guilty — like that now that I have the strength to, I should be using it for something more worthwhile than myself. I was pitched Walk The Walk’s iconic overnight power walk, The MoonWalk, which is making its way  to New York City on July 20th at 10pm, and it sounded like just the ticket. Presented by Empire BlueCross BlueShield, the overnight walk through New York City will have an estimated 8,000 participants and will begin with a participant opening ceremony celebration at Randall’s Island. Walkers will then depart weaving through Manhattan past the city’s most iconic landmarks, lit up brightly at night. There...

Taking a break in the middle of Passover to Share, Love, Celebrate the Best of P&G

Taking a break in the middle of Passover to Share, Love, Celebrate the Best of P&G

I don’t go to a ton of events during Passover – it’s hard. Glutton that I am, put me in a room full of everyone else eating snacks and drinking drinks, and I sort of want to kill them all. But I can’t become a hermit in the name of food, either. That’d be, well, crazy — and I did find myself out and about a few times this week, most notably for the super fun  Share, Love, Celebrate the Best of P&G event this past Wednesday. Terrence J was the host of the event — the “E News” co-anchor and actor  was super charming as he shared some of his favorite products and revealed that P&G would be “sharing the love” with a celebratory brandSAVER® coupon booklet in local newspapers tomorrow (Easter...
