Sally summer hair

Sally summer hair

I’m out of town a lot this month, and my awesome (and very lucky) interns have gotten to go to some pretty amazing events on my behalf that I really wish I had been able to attend myself! Last week, I sent intern Demara White to check out a fun summer hair-inspired event at  Sally Hershberger’s downtown NYC location. Demara got a bit of a hair demo from stylist Eddie Parra, who adorned her locks with a sexy loose-piecey side braid that literally took less than five minutes to do (check out her pic!). Here’s Demara’s account!: While braiding my mane, Eddie said that “Low maintenance, over-relaxed, naturally effortless hair is in” – yes, you can now let out that big sigh of relief! Next he added that bright hair is always in style for...

Thursday Throwback: My hair’s virgin days

Thursday Throwback: My hair’s virgin days

If you participate in this sort of thing, you may be playing along with Throwback Thursday on Instagram and Facebook, sharing old (often hilariously embarrassing) pix in the name of friendship. Figured I’d kick it up a notch and share this week’s — also especially horror-some! – right here. An old — as in high-school age – photo of my hair. My natural curls. The curls I speak of that few have ever seen. UNTIL NOW. The final virgin days of my hair. The following summer, I will discover Japanese Straightening — and my hair will be on a perpetual journey of self-loathing...

The Face of Bangz

The Face of Bangz

Normally, I consider the celebration of hair to be at the top of my priority list, but this week I found myself hanging out with the Microsoft crew in Seattle. Of course —  as is always true in my world — as soon as I leave town, tons of fun happens without me. Bangz Salon & Wellness Spa kicked off their second annual The Face of Bangz event earlier this week, on Monday April 22in Montclair, New Jersey. Since I couldn’t make it,  I sent my NJ-based intern, Gabrielle Bernardini. She had a blast! Check out her full report below. Bangz is an award-winning salon that prides itself on community and finding someone who values not only outer beauty, but inner beauty as well. The event featured five finalists competing for a chance to be named the...

Earth Day is Monday — is your hair ready?

Earth Day is Monday — is your hair ready?

I once read a fortune cookie that really resonated with me — essentially, we  do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors, we borrow it from our Children. Consider that for a moment, and you will be surer than ever you have to do something — probably a much bigger something than you are yet doing — to help keep the Earth viable for that future. I’m so glad this year to see that some people are doing their part. On April 22 (Earth Day) many Aveda Salons will be taking part in a super-cool 24-hour global hair cutting marathon. Aveda stylists from around the world are going to be volunteering for the cause, and proceeds will go toward their support of clean-water causes. Aveda is hoping to set Guinness World Record for the most money...

While I’m stuck in my self-absorbed spell…

While I’m stuck in my self-absorbed spell…

How crazy cute is this animated #hairflipoff GIF Pantene sent me? The other day, I self-Vined (way harder than I anticipated it being – how does one take a video selfie on their iPhone without having that weird retro-90s-bathroom-profile pic look?) – but it was fun trying. I sent the Vine to Pantene, who made it into a fun animated GIF for me that I’m officially obsessed with. Totally worth standing in the middle of a Park Slope cafe during rush hour playing with my hair in front of strangers for. You should try it too! If you submit your own Vine videos via twitter to @Pantene using the hashtag #HairFlipOff , you’ll have the chance to have your Vine turned into a GIF that will be shared via the @Pantene twitter feed on the day of the...

Hair today, gone tomorrow — and how, quite possibly, my hair controls my life

Hair today, gone tomorrow — and how, quite possibly, my hair controls my life

This week, one of my assignments for SheKnows.com included an article on dealing with and preventing hair loss in women. Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow was important research for me — or any woman – because it deals with factors and fears inherent to all our lives and easy ways to help ourselves. Perhaps it was both the best and worst assignment I could have been given, much like giving a gambler an assignment involving the study of roulette, or sending an alcoholic wine tasting. But worse, because it was to show me the crazy web I’ve woven for myself, and just how hard it is to get out. But also that I’m so far from being alone. I’ve always had a very tumultuous relationship with my hair…it’s at the forefront of everything I...

The buzzed hair trend — do or don’t?

The buzzed hair trend — do or don’t?

For me, it’s an absolute don’t. I’m all about getting my hair as big and as fabulous as possible. (Long hair don’t care, bigger the hair – closer to God, etc.) But there’s people who feel differently. And as long as own ideals matches, this hairstyle will be a great way to show some edge and your distinct personal style. You can’t deny the look exudes confidence! The buzzed hair trend has been pretty popular of late. I wrote a analysis of the buzzed hair trend for LovingYou.com today – would love your input as well!

My new hair — unveiled!!

My new hair — unveiled!!

I’ve been chatting for weeks (OK, fine, YEARS) – about how desperately I wanted hair extensions. But at the same time, I was afraid. I’m a rather addictive personality – especially when it comes to things that make me look and feel good. (You know, except eating healthy and exercise, that is.) – and were I to finally get fabulous hair, would it be a gateway drug for me? Would I be obsessed and unable to stop? As I live hand-to-mouth many a month and hair extensions can cost several months rent, that’s a risk I never could afford to take. When LeMetric Beauty Studio contacted me and asked me to play  model at the launch party for their new hair extensions bar, I nearly fell off my chair. Basically, drink a little wine and get a...

My most interactive hair appointment ever: Watch me get hair extensions!

My most interactive hair appointment ever: Watch me get hair extensions!

Dearest friends, a few weeks ago I posted that I was ready for a big hair change but was a little scared to take the leap. Well, the leap is FINALLY happening. Tomorrow night I’m going to get keratin fusion hair extensions (courtesy of LeMetric) LIVE via livestream  – and all of you get to watch. I’m facing my fears and whatever happens,as the truth friends you are, you’ll be there! If my hair melts off? YOU WILL SEE IT LIVE. Quality investigative journalism at its finest, I know. As the name suggests, fusion hair extensions are attached to your hair by undergoing a process called “fusion bonding”. This method works by “fusing” the extensions with keratin proteins from your natural hair – strand by strand...

Six must-have hair products for spring

Six must-have hair products for spring

In between obsessing about my boobs (new bra size!) and butt (the see-saw of diet and exercise!), I’ve been considering a major hair transition. Except…I may have just chickened out. At least temporarily. The devil you know vs. the devil you don’t know, right? And so, I may be getting hair extensions — or I may not. But the decision to get them the day before going to Texas…that I’m absolutely not doing. Just imagine the potential for chaos, distress and dismay when I should be communing among hipsters and eating BBQ?! (MUCH love to the incredible Christina Farrell who spent all of tonight talking me off THAT ledge.) I mean, you guys, it’d be intense. I’d be afraid to wash my hair. LIKE LITERALLY AFRAID. And...
