Dealing with your stuff: Cleaning up all your little messes

Dealing with your stuff: Cleaning up all your little messes

I think everyone has a picture in their mind of their ideal life — it’s this ideal that keeps them working hard each day and propelling themselves forward, toward a place where the imagined becomes reality. But, recently when having dinner with a close friend, this concept came up, and we began discuss if perhaps creating your ideal future is like the old saying of draining the swamp. What if it’s the unplanned messes in our life that acts as alligators, taking up all the time and energy we have, and distracting us from reaching the very goals that keep us going? It doesn’t matter if your mess is boyfriend issues, problems paying your rent, or a client who doesn’t respect you — a mess is anything that drains your energy and...

Barbie (and a certain someone else) is ready for an Outback adventure

Barbie (and a certain someone else) is ready for an Outback adventure

Every so often, I imagine it knows how it feels  when a bird has her wings clipped. So used to flying about, visiting amazing places in the name of journalism, that I feel curiously stagnated of late. It never really gets any better, you know…in fact, as time goes on, I get more restless…more frustrated with it all. Much as I hate to spend my Friday evening quote John Mayer, I can’t help but relate: This is a call to the color-blind This is an IOU I’m stranded behind a horizon line Tried to be something true Yes, I’m grounded Got my wings clipped I’m surrounded (by) All this pavement Guess I’ll circle While I’m waiting For my fears to dry Someday I’ll fly Someday I’ll soar Someday I’ll...

It’s what you’ve been waiting for: Soap Opera Fan Fest Weekend (FULL REPORT)

It’s what you’ve been waiting for: Soap Opera Fan Fest Weekend (FULL REPORT)

You guys…WHAT A WEEKEND I HAD LAST WEEKEND. You may recall, before my own recent real-life drama, I did a lot of travel writing — SINCE I’ve had said real-life drama, I’ve done a lot of sitting and…watching soaps… So, it makes sense that…CUE DRAMATIC MUSIC….my first travel foray since would be to head out to Atlantic City for Soap Opera Fan Fest Weekend at Ballys! You would think that’s big enough – but even bigger – my momma was along for the ride. (Bally’s invited me for the weekend as their guest and were kind enough to invite me with a guest!) I’ve been spending a lot of time tweeting of late as I watch General Hospital — it’s one of a few surviving soaps, and it’s...

Wanderlust: Anna Sui/Tumi Luggage Collection

Wanderlust: Anna Sui/Tumi Luggage Collection

During better times, I am something of a road warrior. As soon as my wings are unclipped, I want to get back out there, braving airport bars and invasive TSA — I miss them so!!! – and when I go, I hope to be accessorized with Anna Sui’s new line of luggage for Tumi. Isn’t it purplelicious?! The collection include a computer case, carry on bag, shoe bag and case tote. They range in price from $95 for the shoe bag to $595 for the carry on. You can find the luggage here on annasui.com and here on tumi.com – maybe at least a few pieces should be mine? What do you think? Photo: Anna...

Soooo Queen of the Damned: Liv-Chic Rococo Noir Bed

Soooo Queen of the Damned: Liv-Chic Rococo Noir Bed

As I’m spending a ridiculous (i.e. every waking moment) at home of late, I have decided I should grow up my living quarters a bit. That, or learn to embrace the undead. Can you get more outer-earthly drama than the Liv-Chic Rococo Noir Bed ($2,515, queen size)? I used to be majorly into all things Anne Rice, and I can totally picture Lestat and Akasha (i.e. said Queen of the Damned) canoodling in a bed like this. Hell, it’s downright classic – even cooler than any Anne Rice vampire. Whatever, I’ve had enough of human theatrics – I need to drama up my bedroom (and nod to the immortals?) to a much hotter dare-I-say gothic-chic way, don’t you...

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, says, “Sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it. Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.” What do you think? Does Eating Blueberries Protect us From Breast Cancer?

Does Eating Blueberries Protect us From Breast Cancer?

This is AMAZING news for those of us who appreciate a good blueberry pancake from time to time: In several studies recently conducted at the Beckman Research Institute at the City of Hope, researchers found that feeding blueberry powder to mice significantly reduced the growth and spread of triple negative breast cancer cells, a very aggressive form of cancer. Triple negative breast cancer accounts for 10 to 15% of all breast cancer cases and is highly resistant to traditional chemotherapy treatments. The results of this research led by Dr. Lynn Adams, in the laboratory of Dr. Shiuan Chen, are published in the October 2011 issue of The Journal of Nutrition. In their research, the team fed groups of mice specially formulated diets containing 5% freeze-dried...
