Brave New World: Panasonic to Launch Hair-Washing Robot!

OK, this is pretty amazing — Panasonic will launch a Hair-Washing Robot at the 38th International Home Care & Rehabilitation Exhibition in Tokyo on October 5 – 7, 2011.

Now, lets talk about this…and think about whether it’s a good thing or not.

Arguably, the best part of a salon experience is relaxing back in a reclining chair as a skilled professional massages our scalp and washes our hair. Panasonic says its new Hair-Washing Robot can complete the entire process of hair washing automatically, from wetting to shampooing, rinsing, conditioning and drying. The robot uses its 24 “fingers” to gently wash a person’s head.

Can it be the same as a human being? Can robots replace humans? I mean, I loved Rosie on the Jetsons, but….I don’t know! According to the report, the robot can even store the data of each person’s head shape and preferred washing mode. This video below shows the first model, which was introduced in 2010. Panasonic says the new model (pictured above) has more robotic fingers and improved mechanics. All you have to do is be brave enough to put your head inside the robot and it will wash your hair thoroughly. Pricing information is not yet available.

What do you think? Can a robot replicate our favorite indulgent experience? Would you take the plunge were the opportunity offered? It seems it will be eventually!
