Aging is weird (that’s why I like to pretend I’m not)

alyselfieI always thought I’d be a grownup by this age.

Like, a real grownup. With a husband and a few kids and a dog and maybe a home with more than one closet. More than one room, even.

But yet, here I am, halfway through my thirties, and I have none of those things (except the dog), and mentally/emotionally, I still feel really young. Way younger than I always thought mid-thirties would feel. Except I have a constant reminder I am in said mid-thirties: the mirror.

I’ve noticed it especially the last year or two. Call it stress or just the big clock in the sky, but suddenly, I just look older. I have lines where I never did. I am tired…a lot. I’m still at a stage of my life where I have a lot I need to do, and yet, I don’t look and feel as good as I want to while doing it.

When L’Oreal contacted me about participating in a trial with their custom L’Oreal Revitalift routine, I was all about it.  For the program, I was simply asked to use my L’Oréal Revitalift™ skin care routine for four weeks straight. And, then, write a blog post to share my experience.

Simple enough, right? Routine is something I crave. The world of a beauty writer is the opposite of routine, at times. You try a product — be it hair, face, body, whatever — for a microsecond (so it seems) and then move onto the next. And it’s unfortunate, because very long it simply takes a while to see the true results of using a complete system for the appointed amount of time.

The truth is, when you are younger, you can get away with doing a lot less. I can share harrowing stories of my twenties, where I’d be out until all hours of the night, drink too much, and come home and fall asleep without so much as cleansing my face. The craziest part was, there were no consequences. I had perfect, glowing skin. Always. Youth is wasted on the young.

Now, not so much. I travel a ton, and between that and age, my skin has started to look dry, sad, and neglected. I have crow’s feet, bags under my eyes…and maybe even…possibly SOME WRINKLES.

I can’t. It’s just terrible.

What I liked instantly about Revitalift™ Anti-Wrinkle + Firming Day Cream SPF 18 is that there’s SPF built in. I can get a burn through a closed window while sitting at my desk. SPF is ESSENTIAL for me, year round, and if it’s built into my skincare routine? Well I have a way smaller chance of messing it up.  This product contains SPF 18, which protects against UVA/UVB rays (not only helping protect from burns but sun damage and the potential for skin cancer — no joke.) Also, when paired with the rest of my customized routine, Revitalift™ Anti-Wrinkle + Firming Night Cream and Revitalift™ Anti-Wrinkle + Firming Eye Cream, it was providing hydrating protection 24/7. Whether I was on a plane or on my butt on my couch with my computer (which is basically the only two places you’ll ever find me.) Pro-Retinol A and Stimuplex are helpful in cell turnover, which is what we need to reduce wrinkles and keep our skin firm and supple. If only we could slather such all over our butts and get the same results… (Am I right????)

And so I followed the instructions and for four weeks, I used these 3 products as my skincare routine. No skipping, no cheating, and nothing else.

So, four weeks later, as I sit in a cafe near my home and ready for ANOTHER trip (this time to a dry, cold climate), I am absolutely seeing a difference. My skin feels soft and healthy and hydrated. And while I’m not magically living my picket face reality yet, I do have that bright skin glow of a young person who does not yet have those things. And, obviously, if I’m going to continue to do this single person thing for the foreseeable future, that’s an asset.
